This is the second in a series of essays designed in response to frequent questions posed by patrons and visitors to the Museum concerning the origins of the Museum, its exhibits and collections.

This series as a whole exists under the banner of On the Foundations of the Museum and, in its entirety, provides an encapsulated history of the Museum’s seen collections as well as much previously unpublished biographical detail of the lives of the founders of these collections.

This essay, The Thums: Gardeners and Botanists, provides important information in a botanical register on the lives of two central figures in the history of the Museum, Owen Thum and Owen Thum the younger.
